Hotel San Fantin

Bed & Breakfast Accademia - Venice - Italy

The history of our hotel

The San Fantin Hotel stands opposite to the worldwide famous Fenice Theatre in a little square once known as Campo della Malvasia Vecchia, in the parish of San Fantin. Many places in venice carry the name "Malvasia", due to the name of this sweer oriental wine that was here sold.

Near the «Sottoportico della Malvasia Vecchia» stood a large house owned by the Michiel family who, at the end of 1600
opened one of the first public thatres in
Venice. This theatre was operative not even 20 years (1699-1719)

The original facade of the San fantin Hotel is in reality a monument to the heroic and unlucky upraisal of Daniele Manin who, between 1848 and 1849 leaded the rebellion against the Austrian occupation.  In the history of Venice we read:

"In «Campiello della Malvasia Vecchia» at San Fantino there exists a small building erected in 1869 by Giorgio Casarini to commemorate the resistance of Venice against the Austrian invaders. It consists of a "loggia" where, arranged in architectural fashion, one can see many bombs from the famous bombardment of Venice in 1849. In the facade one can admire the bronze medals of Daniele Manin with the caption "Resist at all Costs" forged after the decree decree of 2 April 1849"
